Meet Leader: Warren Allison. Meet at Florence Mine near Egremont at 10.30am. The meet is graded “Easy” and is to visit Europe’s last deep iron ore mine to work closing in 2008. The pit head complex was scheduled in 2018. If time permits a visit to Saltom Coal Pit near Whitehaven which was Cumbria’s first undersea coal mine will be made.

Note – mine exploration is a high-risk sport and it is not possible to reduce all risks to a low level. CATMHS (a CIO) seek to support exploration in a safe manner while recognising that significant risks will remain and the safety of the activity will ultimately depend on the ability of the group and participants to take sensible actions to ensure exploration is conducted with a reasonable margin of safety. However accidents and incidents can happen and everyone taking part in this event do so at their own risk.
