SUMMARY:28 July Silverband Mine Walk\, Great Dun Fell
DESCRIPTION:Large lead and barytes mining site\, with opencast workings\, h
orizontal levels and hushes to explore on the dramatic North Pennine Escar
pment. Silverband Mine was located on Great Dun Fell\, about 3 miles north
-east of the village of Milburn. There had been lead mining in the area si
nce the 14th century and in the 19th century the London Lead Company worke
d the Mine for galena. In the early 20th century\, production was shifted
to mining barytes and in 1939 the La Porte Chemical Company took over the
Mine and drastically increaed the scale of production. A 1.75km long aeria
l ropeway was constructed to transport the ore down the steep slopes of th
e fell\, the remains of which are now a scheduled monument. Between 1939 a
nd 1963 Siverband produced 215\,000 tons of dressed barytes ore. The mine
closed in 1966 but was reopened in 1980s and was worked periodically\, wit
h an adjacent an ore procesing mill.\nGrade Easy (though quite strenuous!)

SUMMARY:Zoom talk- The Rocks at the Edge of the Empire
DESCRIPTION:Ian Jackson (retired British Geological Survey) will a talk on
his book through 50 sites exploring how the rocks of the Roman frontier
in northern England shaped its history. It reveals how the landscape and i
ts natural origins connect to its archaeology. \n\nThe book explains how t
he landscape the Romans first encountered came to be\, how rocks determine
d their decisions about their defences and how the Romans exploited and tr
aded the resources the natural environment offered. It examines the challe
nges faced by the Roman army as their commanders\, surveyors\, craftsmen a
nd quartermasters plotted effective route lines through difficult terrain
and sourced building materials\, energy\, mineral and water resources \n\n
What did rocks ever do for the Romans? The answer is pretty much everythin
 g. From the siting of their defences\, to providing building stone\, metal
s for their swords\, slingshots and tools\, coal for their heating and coo
king\, pigments for their clothes and paints\, and semi-precious stones fo
r their jewellery\n\nCumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society is invit

. There are opportunities to explore extensive working places and see some
fantastically preserved artifacts. For the cavers among us modified natur

aminable throughout. \nThe mine features some moderate squeezes & stooping
but is mostly typical dry walking height horse level with some small scra
mbling sections (Think Nenthead). Upon first entering the level two falls
have been dug through which lead to short sections of waist deep water. Wa
ders can be used to good effect here and a roomy junction afterwards acts
as a changing room/place to store your waders for the rest of the trip. Th

SUMMARY:Goldscope Mine\, Newlands Valley
DESCRIPTION:Goldscope is one of the oldest Copper Mines in Cumbria\, dating
back to the 1560’s. This meet explores the earliest underground working
s here and the audacious engineering. We can also visit some of the extens
ive Victorian Lead mining that used some of the same Elizabethan levels.\n
\nThe walk is moderate with a few steep &amp\; rocky sections. There is a
nice SRT option for those who wish to explore below Adit and an interestin
g traverse to see more coffin levels. Please bring your SRT gear or harnes
s &amp\; cowstails if you wish to take these options. Everyone needs helme
t &amp\; headtorch &amp\; gloves as much of this meet is underground.\n\nT
here is a few inches of water in some levels.\nBring food and clothing sui

SUMMARY:Snailbeach Mine Walk
DESCRIPTION:Snailbeach mine ranks as one of the best surviving examples of
a lead mining complex. It retains a remarkable concentration of ruined str
uctures which preserve evidence for an evolving sequence of mining techniq
ues from the late 18th century through to the 20th century and\, together
with earthworks and buried remains\, illustrates the whole surface history
of the industry during that period. Many of the structures survive partic
ularly well and form a large group illustrating the mine's general layout
during its period of peak production in the 19th century Shropshire Caving
and Mining Club will lead us on an underground walking trip around Landin
g Level and Perkins Level\, along with exploration of the extensive surfac
 e remains.

SUMMARY:Snailbeach Mine SRT
DESCRIPTION:Snailbeach mine at the peak of production during the 19th centu
ry was reputed to be extracting the largest volume of lead per acre in Eur
ope. Shropshire Caving and Mining Club will lead us on an underground SRT
trip to 40 Yard from Perkins Level - 3-4 relatively short pitchs (20m max)
\, mostly sloping with a few deviations. No complicated rebelays. Possibil
ity of a scenic route back up by slightly more exposed route . Can return
by original route too.\nOnce on 40 Yard chance to walk out to Chapel shaft
inset and out towards Black Tom. Back on Perkins can look at various stop
es\, plus some short SRT routes in top stope.\n\nPlenty of photo opportuni
ties. Can stay dry with wellies\, occasionally just over.\n
