SUMMARY:Treasures of the Earth - Ruskin's Mineral Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ruskin bought Brantwood in 1871 and lived there until he died i
n 1900 and he became a part of Coniston lending his name to the schools an
d the Ruskin Museum.\nRuskin was one of the largest private collectors of
minerals in 19th Century and gave invaluable collections to public institu
tions\, schools and universities. With loans of remarkable specimens\, Tr
easures of the Earth explores his love of stones and their profound meanin
g to him. \nTreasures of the Earth brings together for the first time so
me of Ruskin’s most precious minerals\, many of which he donated to nati
onal and local institutions\, including the famous Edwardes Ruby and the S
omerville Regalia. The show explores the mineral riches of Ruskin’s coll
ections\, his contribution to the emerging science of mineralogy\, and the
spiritual interpretation he put upon them. There are important loans from
a number of institutions including the Natural History Museum\, Sheffield
Museums and Galleries\, and The John Rylands Library.\nThe meet will star
t at Brantwood and after move to the Ruskin Museum to view its collection
and the display on the copper mines which CATMHS has contributed to.\nLet
Warren Allison know if you are coming 07442002382.\n
