History

The Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS) is a society interested in historical industrial sites with an emphasis on mining remains above and below ground. It is actively involved with the exploration of these sites.

CATMHS was formed in 1979. The name originated from the group’s attempt to buy some land in Furness rich in mining remains.

The scheme was unsuccessful, but the group has remained together and since then has done much original research and exploration, not only in Cumbria but in other areas of Britain including Wales and Cornwall.

The society is most active in Cumbria where visits will often yield new discoveries. Other recent years much important conservation work has been carried out in several famous mines.

Mining history with its close contacts with the history of industry, transport and sociology makes a fascinating study and for some it becomes more than a leisure interest.

Field meets take place regularly throughout the year both on the surface and underground in a wide variety of venues. These meets range from easy “walk-in” trips to severe vertical descents.

Evening walks in the Lake District take place in summer and social evenings are held in winter.

CATMHS publishes a newsletter 4 times a year, containing news and short articles of interest and an occasional journal “The Mine Explorer” containing original research and reports on exploration, surveying and conservation projects.
